The starter is a powerful electric motor that briefly turns the engine when you start your vehicle. It works with the battery, solenoid, flywheel, and crankshaft—so a no-start problem is not always caused by the starter alone.

What is a starter?

Car starters are electrical motors in charge of starting your vehicle’s engine. In order to work, the starter receives a tremendous amount of electricity from the battery. When you turn your key in the ignition, the battery sends an electrical current to the starter solenoid, which is located on the starter motor, and then the starter solenoid actually powers the starter. When the starter receives the electrical current from the battery, a small gear extends out of the starter and engages the vehicle’s flywheel. The small gear will begin to turn the flywheel, and then the flywheel turns the crankshaft, which powers the engine. Once the engine starts, the small gear from the starter will disengage from the flywheel and will retract back into the starter.

What happens when you start the car?

You turn the key

The starting circuit requests electrical power from the battery.

The solenoid sends power to the starter motor and moves its gear into position.

The engine turns

The starter gear spins the flywheel, which rotates the crankshaft.

The starter releases

Once the engine runs on its own, the starter gear retracts.

Common signs the starting system needs attention

A click but no crank

A click can point to a weak battery, poor connection, solenoid issue, or starter problem.

Intermittent starting

If the engine starts normally one time and refuses the next, the starting circuit needs testing.

Grinding or free-spinning

Unusual sounds may indicate that the starter gear is not engaging the flywheel correctly.

Lights work, engine does not

Working accessories do not rule out the battery, cables, or starter because cranking needs much more current.

These components work together, and similar symptoms can come from different failures. Testing the complete starting and charging system is more reliable than replacing a part based on sound alone.
